How Long Will My Child Need Speech Therapy?

Families often ask how long their child will be in therapy. The truth is, it’s difficult for SLPs to know. While we wish there was a concrete answer, there are many factors that influence the duration of treatment:

  • Diagnosis and severity of the disorder

  • Client and family motivation

  • Relevant medical, educational, and family history

  • Implementation of practice and carry over at home

  • Family involvement

  • Frequency of therapy

  • Personality characteristics

  • Behavior

  • Responsiveness to therapy

  • Rapport with therapist

The bottom line is that it’s an obscure question to answer. Every child and their families' ability to support their child is different. We need to meet children and families where they are and some challenges can take a long period of time to remediate. With that said, it is important to note that our goal at RM Studio is to include client’s and their families in decisions regarding their plan of care to ensure that they have the opportunity to reach their maximum potential in their communication and wellness. We want your child to finish therapy as quickly as they are able to. For specific questions regarding your child’s duration of therapy, schedule a discussion with your SLP.

With Love,

RM Studio
